What is the best weight training to prepare for a 10/k race?

jayevans2121 asked:

I am 27, soon to be running my first 10/k race in about 9 weeks. I am looking for a suitable weight training program to accompany my running program. I am also wondering if there are any supplements that would be beneficial to distance running.

This article from Running Times is worth a look — it gives some different perspectives on whether or not strength training is beneficial to distance runners:

My advice would be to do core strengthening exercises (crunches, stability poses, etc) — these will help your running form, and show a lot of benefits even in the short term.

Doing more lighter weight work outs with more reps will help build up stamina and keep you from bulking up…

do weight lifting exercises that will tone and cut such as 4 sets of 15 squats at a medium weight.

If this is your first 10/k race I would advise not doing any weight training because your body should be as supple as possible. If you have 9 weeks left just make sure you are doing the best running training and if strength is what you want, then do some hill training only on a slight incline.

The most mportant thing at the moment is to make sure you are doing adequate stretching, what ever time you were going to allocate to weight traing replace with a good stretching routine.
