The annual Muscle Beach Championship bodybuilding, figure and bikini competitions were held on Monday. Competitors strutted their stuff in front of the holiday crowd at Venice Beach and a special guest was inducted into the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame. New to festivities this year was a hot dog eating contest.

On Friday July 10th, Cameo Gallery hosted Japandroids , who shared a bill of pure noise and fun with Dinowalrus . Dinowalrus opened for the evening with “Cage Those Pythons” an ode to bodybuilding on Venice Beach, complete with reverb-laden guitar licks and chilled out percussive sections, all culminating into an explosion of sound. Their short set also featured other songs such as “Nuke Duke ‘Em”, a frantic piece of music that simultaneously made me feel antsy and like I had to dance.
